NEMA Receives 708 Stranded Nigerians Repatriated from Niger

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) received 708 Nigerians repatriated from the Niger Republic in a Federal Government‑led effort. The group, arriving in Kano via Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, includes 292 males and 416 females, some with children, from across several states including Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna. Authorities began documentation and profiling on arrival and provided immediate humanitarian support like food, shelter, blankets, mosquito nets, and hygiene kits. Medical teams treated individuals in need, with severe cases referred to health facilities. Returnees will be transported to home states after verification.

VP. Shettima Welcomes Swiss Vice President, Delegation in Abuja


Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima welcomed Swiss Vice President and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and a high‑level Swiss delegation in Abuja to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties. The Swiss officials were received at the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, with discussions expected on trade, migration, and human capital development. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar also received the delegation. Both countries will explore cooperation on development assistance, peacebuilding, and institutional partnerships, reflecting Nigeria’s efforts to deepen global relations and attract investment. 





UK Summons Iranian Envoy Over Alleged Espionage Activities


The United Kingdom summoned Iran’s ambassador to London, Seyed Ali Mousavi, over alleged espionage and national security concerns. British authorities say two suspects, an Iranian and a dual Iranian‑British national, were charged under the UK’s National Security Act for allegedly assisting a foreign intelligence service and surveilling sites linked to London’s Jewish community. In a related incident, an Iranian man and a Romanian woman were arrested trying to access a high‑security Royal Navy base in Scotland. The UK government expressed concern about Iranian activities amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. 







US, Costa Rica Seal Deal on Third‑Country Deportations


The United States and Costa Rica formalised a new migration agreement allowing the US to deport up to 25 migrants weekly from other countries to Costa Rica. President Rodrigo Chaves described the pact as voluntary, aligning with Costa Rica’s laws and human rights standards. US special envoy Kristi Noem and Costa Rican officials signed the deal as part of wider regional cooperation against organised crime. Similar migrant relocation agreements exist with El Salvador and Panama. International organisations have raised concerns about the humanitarian implications and legality of sending deportees to non‑origin countries under such frameworks. 


23‑Year‑Old US‑Based Nigerian Graduate Killed by Fleeing Driver


Oluwalayomi “Layo” Fadero, a 23‑year‑old Nigerian graduate and resident in the United States, died in a collision in Nashville, Tennessee, when a fleeing suspect driving against traffic struck her vehicle. The suspect, 52‑year‑old Ray Eugene Padgett, allegedly stole a truck and evaded police before the crash. Fadero, a recent Fisk University graduate enrolled in a nursing programme, was described by friends and lecturers as compassionate and dedicated. Padgett sustained non‑life‑threatening injuries and faces multiple felony charges, including vehicular homicide. A memorial was set up, and a fundraiser launched to support burial arrangements. 









Diaspora Kenyans Demand Clear Voter Registration Framework Ahead of 2027 Elections


Kenyans living abroad are calling for a clear and structured voter registration framework ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing confusion over timelines and procedures. The Kenyan Diaspora Alliance urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to simplify and expand access for overseas citizens, whose significant remittances and investments give them a stake in national governance. Conflicting information about overseas registration led Kenya’s embassy in Berlin to clarify that no registration has started there. The IEBC has yet to announce a global schedule, highlighting challenges in extending electoral services internationally. 






President of Nigerian Community in Turkey, Magbo Named Diaspora Secretary of APC Christian Forum


Prince Magbo, President of the Nigerian Community in Turkey, has been appointed Diaspora Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Christian Forum. The appointment aims to bolster engagement with Nigerians abroad and deepen the party’s influence within the global diaspora. Magbo will coordinate diaspora‑focused initiatives and act as a conduit between overseas Nigerians and APC leadership. The Forum cited his leadership experience in community organisation and advocacy as key to his new role. His responsibilities include mobilising diaspora support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration. 









UK Returnee Dies in Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway Crash While Heading to Wedding


A woman returning from the United Kingdom died in a road crash on the Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway while travelling to a wedding in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The accident occurred when the Toyota Camry she was in collided with a moving truck near Christopher University. Two other passengers were injured and taken to Famobis and Redeemed hospitals. The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency attributed excessive speed as a major factor. Authorities expressed condolences and reiterated warnings about high speeds on long‑distance routes while investigations continue.
