A 23-year-old Nigerian graduate living in the United States, Oluwalayomi “Layo” Fadero, has died following a fatal road crash involving a fleeing suspect in Nashville, Tennessee.
The incident occurred last Friday when a driver, identified as 52-year-old Ray Eugene Padgett, reportedly drove against traffic while attempting to evade law enforcement officers.
Fadero, who had recently graduated from Fisk University, was said to be approaching her neighbourhood along Murfreesboro Pike when the suspect’s vehicle collided with hers on the driver’s side.
Emergency responders confirmed she died at the scene, with authorities noting she had no connection to the police pursuit and was simply an innocent motorist caught in the tragic incident.
Investigators revealed the suspect’s actions followed a chain of earlier incidents, including the theft of a Ford F-250 truck from a car dealership in North Nashville.
During his escape, Padgett allegedly rammed the vehicle owner’s car and later struck an unmarked police SUV, prompting a high-speed chase that reportedly lasted about five minutes and reached speeds of up to 80 miles per hour.
Police said the suspect eventually veered into oncoming traffic around 2:30 p.m., crashing into Fadero’s vehicle and forcing it off the road into a ditch.
Padgett sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was later taken into custody. Authorities confirmed he faces multiple felony charges, including vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment, and attempted criminal homicide, adding that he was on parole with a lengthy criminal record at the time of the crash.
Fadero had recently completed her degree and was enrolled in an accelerated nursing programme, with friends and lecturers describing her as compassionate and dedicated.
A memorial has been set up at the crash site, while a fundraiser launched by supporters has raised over $13,000 to assist with burial arrangements. Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
