A Venezuelan national was injured after being shot in the leg by a U.S. immigration officer during a law enforcement operation in Minneapolis on Wednesday, authorities have confirmed.
The incident occurred during a traffic stop carried out by federal immigration agents. According to official accounts, the man resisted arrest, leading to a physical confrontation between him and an officer.
The situation escalated when two other individuals reportedly emerged from a nearby apartment and joined the struggle.
Federal officials said the officer was attacked with objects including a snow shovel and a broom handle. In response, the officer discharged a firearm in what was described as an act of self-defence, striking the Venezuelan man in the leg.
The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment. His condition was not disclosed, but authorities said the injury was not life-threatening. The officer involved also received medical attention. The two individuals accused of joining the confrontation were taken into custody.
The shooting has triggered renewed criticism of federal immigration enforcement activities in Minneapolis. City leaders reiterated their opposition to the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the area, arguing that such operations endanger public safety and heighten fear in residential communities.
Residents in parts of the city expressed concern over the growing frequency of confrontations involving federal agents, as calls for a review of immigration enforcement tactics continue to mount. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
