The Egyptian government has begun new efforts to strengthen engagement with its diaspora and improve the services available to citizens residing overseas following a high-level coordination meeting led by Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty.+
The meeting brought together representatives from several government ministries and agencies to address key concerns affecting Egyptians abroad and explore ways to simplify administrative procedures. Officials discussed strategies aimed at strengthening the relationship between the state and its expatriate population.
Among those present were Education Minister Mohamed Abdel Latif, Communications and Information Technology Minister Raafat Hindi, and Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Abdel Aziz Konsowa. Delegates from the ministries of defence, interior, finance, housing, and electricity also attended, along with representatives from the Central Bank of Egypt.
Discussions focused on improving services frequently required by citizens living outside the country. One of the issues examined was the customs framework governing the importation of personal items such as mobile phones and vehicles by Egyptians returning from abroad.
Government officials also reviewed policies designed to support diaspora investment and facilitate the return of nationals interested in contributing to the country’s economic development.
Education-related matters were another major topic. Participants explored ways to streamline the recognition of academic qualifications obtained overseas and examined admission policies for students graduating from international school systems who seek placement in Egyptian universities.
The meeting further considered accelerating the digital transformation of consular services. Authorities are aiming to make it easier for Egyptians abroad to obtain official documents and update personal records through digital platforms.
Legal and administrative support for citizens overseas was also addressed, including issues connected to military service obligations, overseas work placements, and the government’s diaspora housing initiative known as “Beit Al-Watan.”
At the end of the discussions, officials agreed to create a regular coordination mechanism among relevant institutions to monitor progress and ensure that the proposed improvements are effectively implemented for Egyptians living abroad.
