Australian authorities relocated several Iranian women footballers seeking asylum after their safe house location was reportedly exposed. The players, who were part of Iran’s visiting women’s football delegation, had sought protection in Australia following backlash at home for refusing to sing their national anthem before a match.
Seven members of the delegation had initially requested asylum amid fears they could face punishment if they returned to Iran. The act of remaining silent during the anthem was widely viewed as a protest against the Iranian government.
However, Australian officials confirmed that one member of the group later reconsidered her decision after speaking with teammates who chose to return to Iran. During the process, she contacted the Iranian embassy in Australia and disclosed the location of the others who had applied for asylum.
Australia’s Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke, said authorities immediately moved the asylum seekers to a new secure location once the breach was discovered. He explained that the relocation was necessary after the embassy became aware of where the players were staying.
The players had earlier been separated from the rest of their squad upon arrival at Sydney Airport to allow them privately consider their asylum options. Concerns had been raised that officials travelling with the team might pressure them against seeking refuge.
The situation has heightened tensions between Iran and Australia. Iranian football authorities accused the Australian government of influencing the players to abandon their country, while Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese publicly praised the women’s courage and pledged that they would receive support.
The remaining members of the Iranian squad have since departed Australia and are currently staying in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, while arrangements are made for their return journey to Iran. Human rights advocates have continued to call for protection for the athletes, warning they could face serious consequences if they return home.
