US Lawmaker Proposes Death Penalty for Child Rapists

A new bill seeking to impose capital punishment on individuals convicted of sexually abusing children under federal law has been introduced in the United States Congress.

The proposed legislation, titled the Death Penalty for Child Rapists Act, was sponsored by Nancy Mace, a Republican lawmaker from South Carolina. The measure aims to expand federal statutes to allow the death penalty for specific child sexual abuse offences.

If passed, the bill would amend Title 18 of the U.S. Code to make capital punishment applicable in cases involving aggravated sexual abuse of a child, sexual abuse of a minor, and abusive sexual contact against children. It would also extend to offences prosecuted under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, including rape of a child within the military system.

Mace argued that the legislation is designed to ensure the most severe penalties for crimes committed against minors. She maintained that offenders who target children should face the highest level of punishment permitted under federal law.

The proposal comes amid heightened national debate over child protection, sentencing standards, and accountability in sexual abuse cases. The lawmaker has previously advocated for stronger measures in cases linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, calling for transparency and justice for victims.

The bill is expected to spark intense legal and constitutional discussions, particularly around existing Supreme Court rulings that limit the use of the death penalty in non-homicide cases. It will now move through the legislative process for consideration in Congress.
