The Nigeria Immigration Service has cautioned Nigerians against travelling abroad through illegal routes or without proper documentation, warning that such actions could expose individuals to exploitation, trafficking, and other serious dangers.
In a statement released on Monday, the agency stressed that all international travel must follow lawful immigration procedures, including possession of valid passports, visas where necessary, and other approved travel documents.
The immigration authorities noted that bypassing official border checkpoints or attempting to leave the country through unauthorised routes violates Nigerian immigration laws and could lead to severe consequences for those involved.
The Service also raised concerns over the increasing activities of fraudulent migration syndicates targeting vulnerable Nigerians with fake promises of employment opportunities, scholarships, and improved living conditions overseas.
According to the agency, many victims of such schemes eventually find themselves trapped in forced labour, human trafficking, or other exploitative conditions after arriving in foreign countries.
The immigration body warned that legitimate travel and recruitment processes do not require individuals to evade official procedures or avoid recognised border posts.
Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad were advised to carefully verify travel offers, recruitment arrangements, and migration programmes through recognised government channels before making commitments.
The Service further urged citizens to avoid dealing with unregistered travel agents or individuals encouraging irregular migration practices, describing such operators as major facilitators of illegal movement and exploitation.
Members of the public were also encouraged to report suspicious migration-related activities to immigration offices and other security agencies to help curb human trafficking and cross-border crimes.
Reaffirming its commitment to border security and citizen protection, the Nigeria Immigration Service said it would continue intensifying efforts to combat illegal migration networks and safeguard Nigerians from fraudulent schemes.
