The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 63-year-old Chinese national at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, over an alleged attempt to smuggle a large quantity of illicit drugs into Nigeria.
The suspect, identified as Ting Hung Kiong, was reportedly intercepted by NDLEA operatives after arriving in the country from Thailand through Dubai aboard an Emirates Airlines flight. Authorities said officers discovered two large suitcases containing 31 kilograms of Canadian Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi said the arrest was part of a broader nationwide operation targeting international drug trafficking networks and illicit drug distribution channels operating across Nigeria.
The agency also recorded arrests at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, where a passenger arriving from Sierra Leone via Addis Ababa was detained after allegedly excreting cocaine pellets while under observation by officials.
At the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, NDLEA operatives arrested a passenger preparing to board a flight to Italy after discovering thousands of opioid pills concealed inside his luggage. Officials said the drugs were carefully hidden to evade security checks.
Elsewhere, the agency carried out raids in Edo, Kano, Ekiti and border communities in Lagos State, leading to the recovery of large quantities of cannabis and other narcotics. NDLEA Chairman, Buba Marwa, commended officers involved in the operations and urged them to intensify efforts against drug trafficking nationwide.
