The United States government has issued a security advisory urging its citizens in Tanzania to prepare for potential nationwide anti-government protests. Authorities expect demonstrations to peak on December 9, though they could begin as early as December 5.
The advisory comes in the wake of tensions following Tanzania’s October 29 elections, which were marked by contested results. Post-election unrest reportedly led to attacks on civilians, destruction of public property, and a countrywide internet blackout that disrupted communications and movement.
Travelers are warned to anticipate significant disruptions, including curfews, roadblocks, ferry cancellations to Zanzibar, and possible suspension of international flights. The embassy stressed that these measures could limit the ability of Americans to move freely or access services.
The U.S. advisory also highlights increased scrutiny of foreigners by Tanzanian security forces. Some foreign nationals have reportedly experienced searches of mobile devices and laptops for politically sensitive material, reflecting a tighter security environment.
Tanzanian authorities have repeatedly emphasized that sharing images, videos, or digital content that could incite public panic constitutes a criminal offense. Officials warn that violations could result in serious legal consequences, adding to the risks for travelers and residents alike.
The embassy encouraged Americans to take proactive measures, including avoiding large gatherings, stocking up on essentials such as food, water, fuel, and medication, and confirming travel plans before heading to airports or ferry terminals.
Officials also urged residents to stay informed about curfews and local regulations, and to review personal safety plans to ensure readiness for shelter-in-place scenarios or sudden disruptions caused by unrest.
The advisory concluded by noting that the embassy’s capacity to provide support could be limited if the security situation deteriorates further, reinforcing the importance of self-preparedness and vigilance for Americans living in or traveling through Tanzania.
