The Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN) has praised President Bola Tinubu's decision to appoint Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, describing the move as one that is already delivering positive outcomes for the country's international standing.
The commendation followed a visit by the organisation's leadership to Ambassador Ibrahim at Nigeria House in New York, where members reviewed Nigeria's recent diplomatic engagements at the United Nations.
In a statement issued by the group's president, Tomi Aregbesola, OAN said Nigeria has witnessed noticeable progress in its global diplomatic influence within just two months of Ibrahim's tenure. The organisation credited his leadership with strengthening the country's presence in key international discussions and expanding its visibility within the UN system.
According to the group, one of the major achievements recorded during the period was Nigeria's successful emergence as chair of the United Nations General Assembly Fifth Committee, the body responsible for overseeing administrative and budgetary matters.
OAN also highlighted the election of Olufemi Elias to the United Nations International Law Commission, describing it as recognition of Nigeria's legal expertise on the global stage. It further pointed to Esther Eghobamien-Mshelia's election to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women for the 2027–2030 term and the appointment of Ahunna Eziakonwa as the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Africa as additional milestones reflecting Nigeria's growing international relevance.
The organisation urged President Tinubu to continue prioritising competence in appointments to positions with international responsibilities, arguing that placing experienced Nigerians in strategic offices would strengthen the country's global engagement and foster closer collaboration with citizens in the diaspora.
OAN also welcomed Ambassador Ibrahim's commitment to supporting the organisation's activities, including its annual Nigerian Independence Day Parade scheduled to hold in New York this October.
