U.S. Embassy Warns Citizens Ahead of Abuja Protest as Security Tightens Around Aso Rock

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security advisory to its citizens ahead of a planned protest in Abuja, urging Americans to avoid demonstration sites and remain alert amid heightened security measures across the Federal Capital Territory.
The protest, known as #OccupyAsoRock, was organized by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore alongside members of the Take It Back Movement. Organizers said the demonstration was intended to draw attention to growing concerns over insecurity and the increasing number of kidnappings across the country.
In a notice released before the protest, the U.S. mission cautioned that large gatherings could lead to traffic disruptions, road closures, and an increased security presence in key areas of Abuja. The embassy advised its citizens to avoid locations where demonstrations were expected and to seek alternative routes if necessary.
The advisory noted that parts of the city, including the Central Business District, Eagle Square, and areas surrounding the Federal Capital Development Authority, could experience movement restrictions and congestion due to security operations.
Ahead of the demonstration, authorities deployed personnel from several security agencies to strategic locations across the capital. Armed operatives were stationed near the Presidential Villa and other government facilities, while checkpoints and barricades were mounted on major roads leading to sensitive locations.
The increased security presence resulted in heavy traffic in several parts of Abuja, affecting commuters traveling through areas around the Federal Secretariat, the National Assembly, and the Supreme Court.
Organizers of the protest said their demands included the immediate rescue of abducted schoolchildren, teachers, and other victims of kidnapping in different parts of Nigeria. They argued that stronger action was needed to address the country's security challenges and protect citizens from criminal attacks.
Despite the security concerns, the U.S. Embassy confirmed that its consular offices in Abuja and Lagos would continue normal operations. The mission also encouraged American citizens to monitor local developments, remain aware of their surroundings, carry valid identification, and review personal security plans while moving around the country.
