Nigerian Community Demands Probe After Man Dies During South African Police Operation

The Nigerian community in South Africa is calling for an independent investigation following the death of a Nigerian national, Chika Ibe, during a police operation in Cape Town
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday at Parksig Villas in the Bellville area. According to community representatives, Ibe died while officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) were carrying out an operation at the location.
The case has sparked widespread reactions after a video circulated on social media showing a body believed to be Ibe's being placed into a police vehicle. The footage, which has drawn strong public criticism, captured an eyewitness expressing anger over the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
As of Friday, South African authorities had not released an official statement detailing the events that led to the incident or confirming the allegations made by witnesses and community members.
The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has strongly condemned the incident and called for a transparent investigation. The association alleged that Ibe, who was from Lokpaukwu in Abia State, suffered severe physical abuse and inhumane treatment while in police custody during the operation.
NICASA President Frank Onyekwelu urged the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and SAPS leadership to immediately launch an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. He stressed that any officer found to have violated the law should be held accountable.
The association maintained that allegations of torture, excessive force and unlawful killing must be thoroughly investigated, emphasizing that respect for human rights and the rule of law should remain paramount.
The incident comes amid ongoing concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in South Africa, where reports of xenophobic attacks have continued to generate anxiety within immigrant communities. Many Nigerians and other African migrants have repeatedly appealed for stronger protection and equal treatment under the law.
Investigations are expected to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Chika Ibe's death, while community leaders continue to demand justice and accountability.
