U.S. President Donald Trump has to suspend migration from what he described as “Third World countries” following a fatal shooting involving a National Guard member in Washington, D.C.
The attack left one soldier dead and another critically injured, intensifying debates over immigration policy, national security, and the role of the military in domestic protection.
Trump said the freeze would allow the U.S. immigration system to “fully recover” and ordered a review of Green Cards and residency permits for individuals from countries he labels “of concern.”
He also warned that anyone deemed “not a net asset to the United States” could face removal, a statement that has sparked criticism over its broad and sweeping scope.
The suspect, a 29-year-old Afghan national who had previously served with U.S. forces in Afghanistan, allegedly carried out an ambush-style attack on guards patrolling near the White House.
Federal authorities are investigating the shooting as a potential act of terrorism. Additional troops have been deployed to Washington and other cities to bolster security and prevent further incidents.
Critics argue the policy unfairly targets entire communities despite rigorous vetting of asylum seekers, warning that it could fuel discrimination and human rights concerns.
The policy’s implementation remains unclear, with no official list of affected countries yet released. Investigations continue into the attack’s circumstances and the alleged shooter’s background.
