President Tinubu Urges Nigerian Doctors Abroad to Return, Boost Healthcare Sector

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian medical doctors and other healthcare professionals living abroad to return home and support ongoing efforts to strengthen the country's healthcare system under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The President made the appeal on Friday while receiving a delegation of the Nigerian Diaspora Medical Associations Worldwide at the State House in Abuja during the 2026 National Diaspora Day celebration.
Tinubu said Nigeria needs the expertise, innovation and experience of its highly skilled professionals overseas to build a resilient and world-class healthcare system. He encouraged diaspora doctors to contribute through permanent return, partnerships, investments and knowledge-sharing.
The President also praised the delegation for conducting medical outreach programmes across different regions of Nigeria, providing specialist consultations, surgeries, health education and other life-saving services to thousands of people.
Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the visiting healthcare professionals were eager to give back to Nigeria by supporting reforms in the health sector. She noted that many Nigerians abroad were willing to contribute their expertise to national development.
Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, described the collaboration as evidence that the Renewed Hope Agenda is attracting support from Nigerians in the diaspora. He announced that the Federal Ministry of Health would make its partnership with diaspora healthcare professionals an annual programme.
