NiDCOM Honours 32 Diaspora Nigerians for Outstanding Contributions to National Development

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has honoured 32 exceptional Nigerians living abroad, alongside organisations and distinguished individuals, at the 2026 National Diaspora Merit Awards for their outstanding contributions to Nigeria's development and achievements across various sectors.
The awards were presented during the 2026 National Diaspora Day celebration held in Abuja, where government officials, diplomats, development partners, and members of the Nigerian diaspora gathered to celebrate excellence, patriotism, and national service.
Speaking at the event, NiDCOM Secretary, Engr. (Dr.) Sule Yakubu Bassi, said the awards were created to recognise Nigerians in the diaspora who continue to excel professionally while promoting a positive image of Nigeria globally.
Bassi congratulated the awardees, describing them as worthy ambassadors of Nigeria whose achievements reflect resilience, innovation, and patriotism. He urged them to remain committed to supporting Nigeria's development by investing their expertise, knowledge, and resources in the country.
He also encouraged other Nigerians abroad to emulate the recipients, stressing that the nation's progress depends significantly on the active involvement of its citizens in the diaspora.
Representing the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, described Nigerians in the diaspora as a vital force in the country's growth and stability. She commended NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, for consistently recognising the contributions of Nigerians overseas and congratulated the award recipients for their dedication to national development.
A key highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of several diaspora medical associations for their commitment to strengthening Nigeria's healthcare sector through the Diaspora Health Initiative. The honoured organisations included the Canadian Association of Nigerian Physicians and Dentists (CANPAD), Concerned Medics Foundation, Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain (MANSAG), Nigerian Association of Medical Doctors Australia, Nigerian Doctors Forum–South Africa, Nigerian Medical Association Germany, and DOWA.
