President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to British-Nigerians Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson following their historic inaugurations as mayors in the United Kingdom

In a statement issued in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the duo for exemplifying the excellence, integrity, and hard work that Nigerians in the diaspora are known for.

Opeyemi Bright, 29, was sworn in as the youngest-ever Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, a diverse London borough. Her political career began in 2018 when she became the borough’s youngest Labour councillor at age 22, after years of active community engagement.

Jason Jackson, meanwhile, made history as the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington since the borough was established in 1900. His rapid rise in public service began with his election as councillor in 2022, followed by his role as Chair of the Homes and Communities Committee in 2023.

President Tinubu commended both mayors for their dedication to public service and encouraged them to remain steadfast in promoting values of honesty, diligence, and commitment to the common good.

“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I extend my sincere congratulations to Mayors Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson. I trust in your capacity to positively impact your communities and serve as role models to young Nigerians worldwide,” the President stated.

He added that their journeys from councillors to mayors serve as compelling testimonies to what can be achieved through perseverance and a passion for service.
