Former senator Shehu Sani has urged Nigerians and other African nationals affected by the recent wave of United States visa revocations to return to their home countries before facing possible immigration actions.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, made the call on Monday through a post on his official X account. He warned that those whose visas were cancelled risk detention or deportation if they remain in the U.S. illegally.
According to him, no matter how long Africans stay abroad, they may still be reminded that they are in a foreign land. “Nigerians and other Africans whose visas have been revoked should quickly return home before they are arrested. No matter how comfortable you get abroad, one day you’ll be reminded it’s not your father’s house,” he wrote.
His comments follow reports that the U.S. government, under President Donald Trump’s administration, has revoked tens of thousands of visas since January 2025. Data from the U.S. Department of State indicate that the action covers student, work, and visitor visas, citing reasons such as overstays, criminal violations, and threats to public safety.
The U.S. government has also toughened its visa screening process in recent months, introducing stricter checks and reduced validity periods for several categories, including student and exchange visitor visas.
Sani’s remarks have sparked online conversations among Nigerians abroad, with some expressing concern over the growing uncertainty surrounding U.S. immigration policies under the Trump administration.
