Speaking at a one-day conference organized by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Nigeria Group, themed “Building for 300 Million: Driving Urban Transformation,” Sanwo-Olu noted that Nigeria’s rapid urbanization requires immediate, coordinated action.

The governor highlighted that Lagos and RICS share a vision for sustainable, well-planned, and resilient cities. Many of the state’s real estate and infrastructure projects have benefited from RICS’ professional standards and expertise.

Sanwo-Olu said the partnership between the Lagos State Government and RICS shows how policy-making and technical capacity can complement each other. While government provides the framework, professionals drive innovation, integrity, and competent delivery.

He added that Lagos remains a model for urban transformation in Africa, pointing to the THEMES+ Agenda, which prioritizes inclusive growth and continuous upgrades to infrastructure.

“Expertise alone is insufficient,” said Tayo Odunsi, chairman of RICS Nigeria Group and CEO of Build Africa. “Nigeria’s future depends on quality, sustainability, and resilience in development.”
“If Lagos succeeds, Nigeria will not just build cities we will build global trust,” said Akin Opatola, President of FIABCI Nigeria, stressing that Lagos’ alignment of urban transformation goals with professional excellence would inspire national confidence.

Other speakers, including Uche Obi, a fellow of the RICS Governing Council, noted that building for a projected 300 million reflects Nigeria’s demographic pressure, cultural strength, and creative potential. The conference highlighted the need for collaboration to ensure cities are sustainable and globally competitive
