In a press statement released by the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, it was announced that a five-man syndicate involved in extorting pedestrians at the International Trade Fair Bus Stop in Lagos has been apprehended. This operation is part of LAGESC's ongoing efforts to ensure pedestrian safety and eliminate environmental infractions in the state.
The operation, led by Corps Marshal Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (retd), was initiated after a viral video on social media exposed the syndicate's activities. Major Cole stated, "We caught wind of the negative acts of these criminals hindering pedestrian activity at the popular Trade Fair bus stop via a viral video circulating on social media and we swung into action to arrest the five suspects involved, to serve them justice through the courts for the pain caused to Lagosians in this rainy season."
The suspects, identified as Elisha Odunsi (19), Muhammed Saidu (20), Tunde Kazeem (20), Musbau Habeeb (26), and Muftau Ottun (36), are set to face prosecution for their actions.
In a related incident, three more suspects were detained at Queens Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, for illegally accessing a government-sealed building for criminal purposes. These individuals will also be prosecuted.
Major Cole also took the opportunity to remind Lagosians about the importance of proper waste disposal, urging them to use approved PSP operators and avoid dumping refuse in drains, gutters, and canals to prevent flooding during the rainy season. He emphasized pedestrian safety, encouraging residents to use strategically-erected bridges to cross highways. KAI operatives are stationed at various points across the state to enforce compliance and ensure safety.
This crackdown by LAGESC highlights the agency's commitment to maintaining order and safety in Lagos, ensuring that residents can navigate the city without fear of extortion or environmental hazards.
