Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated his administration’s resolve to reinforce policies and institutions aimed at safeguarding consumers across Lagos State

Speaking through the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice at an event marking World Consumer Rights Day in Lagos, the governor stressed that consumer protection has become central to public safety, economic stability, and social fairness.

He noted that Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, carries a significant responsibility to ensure that goods and services offered within its markets meet acceptable standards of safety, quality, and transparency.

According to him, building consumer trust directly supports economic growth, as confident buyers are more likely to participate actively in the marketplace, thereby strengthening overall economic performance.

Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the role of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency in handling complaints, resolving disputes, and promoting ethical business practices, describing its efforts as vital to maintaining order in the state’s commercial environment.

He urged business operators to prioritise product integrity and transparency, while encouraging residents to stay informed about their rights and report substandard or unsafe products when necessary.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment emphasised ongoing collaboration with regulatory bodies to intensify market monitoring and enforce compliance with established standards.

She maintained that a secure and transparent marketplace is essential for sustainable economic development, noting that consumer confidence plays a key role in driving innovation and business growth.

The government further called on residents to take responsibility by verifying product authenticity, making informed purchasing decisions, and reporting irregularities to relevant authorities.

In his remarks, the General Manager of LASCOPA highlighted the need for stronger partnerships and increased public awareness to tackle emerging challenges, particularly in digital commerce and product standardisation.

He added that sustained efforts in enforcement and education would be critical to protecting consumers from counterfeit and unsafe goods while ensuring a more reliable marketplace in Lagos.
