A sniper attack on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas, Texas, left one detainee dead and two others critically injured on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. Authorities say the gunman, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, opened fire from the roof of a nearby building before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to a statement by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the shooter fired multiple rounds at the ICE facility, striking detainees who were in a secure transfer area. Initially, officials reported that two detainees had been killed, but DHS later clarified that one detainee died while two others remain in critical condition. The Mexican foreign ministry confirmed that one of the wounded victims is a Mexican national.

While investigators have not yet confirmed a motive, the FBI revealed that unspent bullets recovered near the scene were marked with the words “ANTI-ICE”, suggesting the attack may have been politically motivated. “Early evidence points to anti-ICE sentiment, though we are still reviewing all materials,” FBI special agent Joe Rothrock said at a press conference.

FBI Director Kash Patel posted a photo on X showing several unused bullets, one inscribed with “ANTI-ICE.” He condemned the attack as a “despicable, politically motivated assault on law enforcement.”

The Dallas field office where the shooting occurred is a key processing point for detainees awaiting transfer to long-term detention centers. ICE has faced widespread criticism in recent years for aggressive immigration raids and detentions, making it a frequent target of protests.

This attack follows a series of violent incidents targeting immigration facilities in Texas. In July, an ICE facility in Alvarado, Texas, was attacked by armed assailants who injured a police officer and vandalized property. Just days later, a gunman armed with an assault rifle opened fire on a U.S. Border Patrol annex in McAllen, wounding two officers and an employee before being killed.

Law enforcement agencies are continuing to investigate Jahn’s background, possible affiliations, and whether he acted alone. DHS confirmed that federal counterterrorism units are assisting in the inquiry.

The incident underscores the rising tensions around immigration enforcement in the United States, where ICE officers have become both defenders of federal law and flashpoints in the nation’s polarized debate over border security.
