Nigeria’s tourism sector is set to receive a major boost as the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) begin plans to reinstate dedicated tourism information desks at major airports across the country.

The initiative, announced during a meeting between NTDA’s Director-General, Olayiwola Awakan, and FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Onabanjo-Kuku, aims to provide arriving passengers with immediate access to travel information, guides, and details on key tourist attractions.

According to Awakan, airports serve as the first point of contact for international visitors, making them critical gateways to Nigeria’s tourism potential. The tourism desks will offer maps, travel options, and highlights of destinations, ensuring visitors can plan their trips efficiently upon arrival.

Awakan described Nigeria as “sitting on a gold mine” of tourism opportunities, ranging from cultural heritage sites and natural landscapes to eco-tourism and adventure destinations. He emphasized that the country needs a combination of compelling storytelling, reliable data, and seamless travel experiences to reposition Nigeria as a world-class tourism destination.

FAAN’s Onabanjo-Kuku welcomed the renewed partnership, noting that aviation and tourism are naturally connected. She assured that FAAN is ready to collaborate closely with NTDA to improve passenger experience and enhance airport infrastructure to support growth in tourism arrivals.

Both agencies agreed to set up a joint committee to oversee data sharing and coordinate ongoing collaborative initiatives, marking a fresh push to reposition Nigeria as a top tourism destination in Africa.
