A Nigerian national, Olaolukitan Abel, who was in custody over a deadly shooting incident in Atlanta, has been found dead inside a detention facility in DeKalb County, United States.

Authorities confirmed that the 26-year-old detainee was discovered unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday evening during routine checks by correctional officers.

Emergency response efforts were immediately initiated by jail personnel, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was later pronounced dead after medical intervention failed.

Officials stated that preliminary observations showed no visible signs of violence or foul play. However, they noted that a full medical examination would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Law enforcement agencies have since opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, assuring that findings will be made public once the process is concluded.

Abel had been arrested following a shooting spree that reportedly occurred across parts of DeKalb County and the neighbouring city of Brookhaven.

The attack led to the deaths of two women, while another individual sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

The incident had sparked concern within the local community due to its random nature, with authorities increasing vigilance as investigations into both the shooting and the suspect’s death continue.
