The National Sports Commission (NSC) has expanded its search for elite sporting talent among Nigerians abroad, naming teenage sprinter Annabelle Fasuba as the first athlete to benefit from its newly launched Podium Performance Prospect Project (P4).

A delegation led by NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, visited the Fasuba family in the United Kingdom to formally present the 14-year-old with the recognition award, marking the initiative’s first international outreach effort.

During the visit, Olopade said the commission is determined to encourage young Nigerian athletes living overseas to maintain strong ties with the country and eventually compete for Nigeria on the global stage. According to him, the move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda aimed at creating opportunities for Nigerians around the world.

Chairman of the NSC Diaspora Talent Committee, Dr. Tunde Adelakun, explained that the programme is not only focused on sporting success but also on ensuring athletes receive proper educational support and long-term career guidance beyond athletics.

Annabelle, regarded as one of the fastest girls in her age category in the United Kingdom, has already attracted attention as a rising star in track and field. She is the daughter of former Nigerian sprint champion and Olympian Olusoji Fasuba and his wife, who also competed as a sprinter.

The Fasuba family thanked the NSC officials for recognising their daughter’s talent and commitment to youth development.

The commission is also considering including Annabelle and other diaspora-based athletes in a special delegation expected at the National Intermediate Games scheduled to take place later this year in Lagos.
