The United Nigerian Americans Council (UNAC) in Maryland has called on Nigerians living in the United States to become more involved in the American political process through voting, civic engagement and participation in elective positions.

Speaking on the organisation’s mission, UNAC leader Dr. Chris Ademiluyi said the council was founded in 2019 to mobilise Nigerians in the diaspora to take active roles in politics and governance in the US.

According to her, the group has continued to promote political awareness and strengthen the voice of Nigerian-Americans within the American system. She noted that the organisation is focused on building a politically informed community capable of influencing public policy and electoral outcomes.

Ademiluyi explained that greater representation of Nigerians in political offices abroad would help amplify the interests and contributions of the Nigerian diaspora community.

She also stressed the importance of voter participation, describing the ballot as a powerful tool for shaping leadership and governance. While some members may not support direct financial donations to politicians, she said many strongly believe in supporting candidates through their votes.

The UNAC leader added that the organisation remains committed to encouraging civic responsibility, community mobilisation and wider participation among Nigerians living in Maryland and across the United States.
