A Nigerian international student in the United Kingdom, Qudus Ajeyemi, has been found guilty of attempted rape and sexual assault following an incident involving a woman in Hull.
The 27-year-old was convicted at a crown court after jurors concluded that he sexually assaulted the woman and later attempted to force himself on her despite her repeated refusals. The verdict was delivered on May 29, 2026, following a trial that examined events which occurred during a night out attended by several people.
The court heard that the woman repeatedly rejected his actions and clearly communicated that she did not consent. Despite her objections, Ajeyemi allegedly continued his advances and attempted to engage in sexual activity against her wishes.
The woman resisted and managed to escape from the room after a struggle, subsequently reporting the incident. Prosecutors described her testimony as consistent and credible throughout the proceedings.
A significant part of the prosecution's case included evidence from a video call between Ajeyemi and the complainant after the incident. During the conversation, he reportedly acknowledged his actions and repeatedly apologised. Text messages sent to the woman seeking forgiveness were also presented as evidence.
Ajeyemi denied the allegations during police questioning, maintaining that any interaction between them was consensual and limited in nature. However, the jury rejected his account and returned guilty verdicts on both charges.
The defendant, who had no previous criminal convictions in the UK, was remanded in custody after the verdict.
Sentencing is expected to take place in the coming weeks. Court proceedings also revealed that the victim initially delayed reporting the incident due to concerns about the potential consequences for Ajeyemi's academic studies and immigration status before eventually deciding to come forward.
