United States immigration authorities have arrested a Mauritanian national, Habib Selah, over allegations that he provided false information in an asylum application filed after entering the country.

According to officials, Selah was taken into custody in May following an investigation into his immigration status. Authorities claim he sought asylum in the United States in 2023 on the basis of being persecuted for his sexual orientation.

Investigators later discovered that he married a woman while his asylum case was still under review, raising concerns about the credibility of his original claim. The development prompted immigration officials to open a fraud investigation.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials said Selah entered the country through Arizona in 2023 and was subsequently released pending immigration proceedings. During his stay, he reportedly secured employment as a correctional officer in Indiana.

Local reports indicated that his wife is related to a county law enforcement official whose office later employed him. Authorities, however, stated that employment verification checks conducted at the time of hiring showed that he was authorised to work.

Immigration officials maintain that the asylum application may have been based on false claims and said Selah will remain in federal custody while removal proceedings continue.

The case has drawn attention to concerns about immigration fraud and the screening process for asylum applications in the United States.
