The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has announced a strategic shift toward promoting diaspora-driven investments, as it unveiled plans for the Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference (NIDEC) 2026.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, NiDCOM Chairman and CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the initiative aims to redirect diaspora remittances from basic consumption toward productive investments that can stimulate economic growth and job creation in Nigeria

She noted that Nigerians abroad contribute over $20 billion annually, describing the diaspora as a critical economic and intellectual resource. However, she stressed the need to harness these funds for long-term national development.

The conference is scheduled to take place in Toronto, Canada, from August 13 to 15, 2026. Dabiri-Erewa explained that Canada was selected due to its large population of highly skilled and accomplished Nigerians.

With the theme “Invest Nigeria, Thrive Abroad,” the event will spotlight key sectors such as fintech, agriculture, mining, renewable energy, healthcare, real estate, and the capital market.

According to her, the conference is designed to foster partnerships between diaspora investors and Nigerian businesses, encouraging agreements that could lead to increased capital inflow, innovation, and employment opportunities.

NiDCOM is collaborating with Nigerian and Canadian diplomatic missions to streamline participation, including arrangements for a special visa process

The event will also feature a week-long celebration of Nigerian culture and achievements in Canada, including the Flavours of Nigeria Festival and a landmark hosting of the Headies Awards.

Dabiri-Erewa called on entrepreneurs, professionals, financial institutions, and government stakeholders to participate, noting that the platform will provide opportunities to secure investments and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s economic transformation
