The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has expressed profound sorrow over the deaths of two Nigerians who lost their lives in separate violent incidents in the United Kingdom and Canada at the start of the new year.

Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the incidents as disturbing and heartbreaking, noting that they underscore growing concerns about the safety of Nigerians living abroad. Her remarks were conveyed through the Commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

Dabiri-Erewa extended condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims, stating that the loss was deeply felt by the Nigerian diaspora community and the nation at large.

She also acknowledged the prompt actions taken by law enforcement authorities in both countries, commending the UK Metropolitan Police and the Toronto Police Service for their swift responses. The NiDCOM boss urged the authorities to conduct comprehensive, transparent, and timely investigations to ensure accountability and justice.

According to the Commission, NiDCOM will collaborate closely with the Nigerian High Commissions in the United Kingdom and Canada to offer consular and welfare support to the affected families, in line with its statutory responsibilities.

Reports indicate that one of the victims, 23-year-old John Temitope Onetufo, was stabbed to death on New Year’s Eve in the Lewisham area of London. In a separate incident, 46-year-old Osemwengie Irorere was shot and killed at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerians in the diaspora and called for continued cooperation between host countries and Nigerian authorities to enhance the safety of Nigerian citizens abroad.
