Authorities in the United Kingdom have announced strict security measures ahead of the upcoming state visit of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to meet with King Charles III at Windsor Castle.
The high-level diplomatic engagement, scheduled for March 18 and 19, is expected to draw significant attention, prompting extensive preparations by security agencies to ensure safety throughout the visit.
Officials confirmed that the security plan includes expanding the restricted airspace around Windsor during the president’s stay. Although the castle already operates under permanent aviation limits, the temporary extension will prohibit unauthorised aircraft from entering the area during the event
According to the police, the airspace restriction will be enforced for several hours on March 18 as part of broader security arrangements coordinated with aviation authorities. Any violation of the rule could lead to arrest and prosecution under UK aviation laws.
Security agencies also revealed that a large number of officers with specialised training will be deployed across the town. The deployment will include armed officers, mounted police units, search teams and road patrol officers responsible for monitoring major routes and public areas.
Authorities noted that surveillance infrastructure, including the town’s CCTV network and protective vehicle barriers, will be used to support the operation and reduce potential threats during the visit.
In addition, several roads and parking areas around Windsor will be temporarily closed starting from March 17 to manage traffic and prepare for ceremonial activities connected to the state visit. Certain pedestrian routes and crossings in the town centre will also be periodically restricted.
Residents and visitors have been advised to expect temporary disruptions and heightened police presence. Security officials are urging members of the public to remain alert and promptly report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
The visit marks a significant diplomatic moment between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with both sides expected to engage in discussions and ceremonial events during the president’s stay.
