Two migrants have died after a vehicle carrying dozens of undocumented travellers overturned in a remote desert region in southeastern Libya, leaving many others stranded in difficult conditions.

The incident reportedly occurred in a desert area roughly 370 kilometres south of Kufra, a city located near Libya’s border region. Security patrol teams responding to the scene discovered about 40 migrants, including men, women, and children, who had been travelling through the harsh terrain.

According to authorities, the migrants had been stranded for more than three days without access to food or drinking water before help arrived, worsening their physical condition.

Emergency responders provided first aid and humanitarian assistance to the survivors before transporting them to a shelter in Kufra. At the facility, the migrants were given medical attention and processed through administrative procedures.

Officials confirmed that two individuals lost their lives as a result of the accident, although their identities have not been released. The nationalities of the migrants involved were also not immediately disclosed.

Libya remains one of the main transit corridors used by migrants from parts of Africa and the Middle East attempting to reach Europe through the Mediterranean Sea. Many travel across vast desert routes in overcrowded vehicles organised by smuggling networks.

Human rights organisations have repeatedly warned that migrants crossing the Libyan desert face numerous dangers, including trafficking, violence, accidents and exposure to extreme environmental conditions.
