The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has successfully repatriated 13 Nigerians who were rescued from human traffickers in Ghana, highlighting ongoing risks associated with irregular migration.
The returnees, including 11 adults and two infants aged four weeks and 16 months, were received in Lagos by NiDCOM officials, where they began receiving medical attention and psychological support to address the trauma experienced during their ordeal.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of NiDCOM, commended the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana for coordinating the rescue operation. She emphasized that the successful repatriation reflects the government’s dedication to protecting citizens abroad.
The exercise was carried out in partnership with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which conducted profiling and documentation of the victims, while NiDCOM handled the logistics to ensure their safe return to their home states.
Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Moses Adeoye, led the operation alongside security agencies and partner organizations to dismantle the trafficking network responsible.
Dabiri-Erewa urged young Nigerians to exercise caution when seeking employment abroad, warning that unverified recruiters and false promises often place citizens at risk of exploitation and life-threatening conditions.
She also acknowledged the support of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, in providing transportation and other critical logistics for rescue operations, describing such contributions as essential for the safe reintegration of vulnerable citizens.
NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to working with diplomatic missions, civil society groups, and security agencies to combat human trafficking and ensure timely assistance for Nigerians in distress overseas.
