The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Diaspora has issued a vote of no confidence in Nigeria’s acting High Commissioner to Australia, Ambassador Jane Bassey Adams, over alleged negligence and lack of engagement with Nigerians abroad.

In a statement released by its president, Comrade Juwon Fayomi, the group criticised the envoy for failing to respond to multiple official communications and not fulfilling key diplomatic responsibilities.

According to NANS, four separate letters requesting collaboration for its upcoming international summit in Australia received no response, a situation it described as unacceptable and troubling.

Fayomi noted that the annual summit serves as an important platform for intellectual exchange, policy discussions, and global collaboration among Nigerian students, stressing that the lack of engagement reflects a gap in accountability.

The association also raised concerns over the envoy’s absence at major Nigerian community events, including Independence Day celebrations held across different regions in Australia.

It argued that such events are crucial for strengthening unity among Nigerians abroad and promoting the country’s image internationally, adding that consistent absence undermines these efforts.

NANS further alleged that the diplomatic mission’s limited participation in community initiatives has contributed to the growing marginalisation of Nigerians in Australia.

The group cited the 2025 launch of the African Centre of Engagement at RMIT University as a missed opportunity, noting that neither the acting High Commissioner nor any representative from the mission attended the event.

It concluded that stronger diplomatic engagement is necessary to build meaningful ties and better support Nigerians living in Australia.
