A tragic road accident claimed the life of a motorist and left his wife critically injured on Thursday morning after a truck carrying granite overturned onto their vehicle at Eleko Junction along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway in Lagos.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash occurred when the fully loaded articulated truck, travelling from the Epe axis toward Ajah, reportedly suffered brake failure while in motion. The mechanical fault allegedly caused the driver to lose control, sending the truck veering off course.
The truck then slammed into a Toyota saloon car heading inward Epe from Ajah. The force of the collision caused the heavy-duty vehicle to topple, crushing the smaller car beneath its weight and trapping its occupants
Emergency responders from LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps, assisted by passersby, worked to extract the victims from the wreckage. The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife, who sustained severe injuries, was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.
Authorities disclosed that the truck driver fled immediately after the incident. Officers from the Akodo Police Division were deployed to secure the area and support rescue efforts while investigations commenced.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as preventable. He stressed the importance of routine vehicle maintenance, particularly for heavy-duty trucks, and cautioned drivers against excessive speeding.
The accident adds to growing concerns over safety along the busy Lekki–Ajah corridor, where frequent heavy truck movement and mechanical failures have been linked to fatal crashes.
