The Lagos State Government has announced plans to replicate the Ikosi-Ketu Biodigester Project across major markets in the state as part of its sustainable waste management strategy. The move aims to reduce landfill dependence and promote the circular economy.

The Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed that Ikosi-Ketu Market generates about 30 tonnes of waste daily, with approximately 90 percent being organic and suitable for biodigestion. He described the project as a practical model for converting waste into clean energy and valuable by-products.
According to him, markets are significant contributors to organic waste generation, and replicating the model would curb indiscriminate dumping, lower evacuation costs, and improve environmental sanitation. The initiative also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and mitigates flooding risks.
Dr. Gbadegesin assured that market stakeholders have been trained to operate the facility and that LAWMA will provide ongoing technical support as similar projects are rolled out statewide.

The expansion plan underscores Lagos State’s commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation in waste management.
