The Liberian government has officially launched the 2025 Diaspora Annual Return, unveiling an ambitious three-week calendar aimed at reconnecting the country with its global Diaspora, promoting national unity, and encouraging investment. The program, themed “Our Liberia, One People,” is expected to attract a 30–40% increase in Diaspora participation compared to previous years.

The government describes the Annual Return as a vital platform for bridging Liberia with its millions-strong Diaspora community. Officials say the initiative encourages cultural exchange, strengthens national identity, and fosters economic collaboration, emphasizing that Liberia’s diversity is its greatest strength.

Madam Urey, Communications Chair for the Return Committee, explained that the theme emphasizes ownership, pride, and collective responsibility. “This year’s program highlights unity beyond tribe, religion, region, or political affiliation, encouraging all Liberians to take part in nation-building,” she said.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration has prioritized Diaspora engagement, according to Erasmus Williams, head of the Diaspora Affairs Office. He described Liberians abroad as “key partners” in national development, contributing an estimated US$350–400 million annually in remittances, one of Liberia’s largest economic lifelines.

The program includes a series of high-profile events designed to foster collaboration and celebration. The Presidential Welcome Ceremony on December 12 will formally kick off the Annual Return, while the Diaspora Investment Summit on December 17 will showcase opportunities in agriculture, tourism, healthcare, ICT, and manufacturing, aiming to connect Diaspora capital with local enterprises.

Other scheduled events focus on reconciliation and social cohesion. On December 18, a Peace and Reconciliation Dialogue will bring together UN agencies, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders to discuss inclusive nation-building, while the Diaspora Heritage Awards on December 20 will honor Liberians at home and abroad for outstanding contributions to the nation.

Children and health sectors are also central to the program. December 21 marks Children’s Celebration Day, supporting over 500 orphaned children, and a Health Investment Forum on December 22 will address critical healthcare challenges, seeking Diaspora expertise and investment to strengthen local systems.

The Annual Return will conclude with a Unity March on December 30 and a closing ceremony in January 2026. Organizers say the expanded program reflects Liberia’s renewed commitment to national reconnection, cultural revival, and economic growth, underscoring the Diaspora’s role as a driver of the country’s future.
