The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has disclosed that no fewer than 400 individuals were prosecuted for various environmental infractions across the state in 2025, as part of its efforts to enforce sanitation laws and promote responsible waste disposal.

The disclosure was contained in a statement released on Monday by the Director of Public Affairs at LAWMA, Mukaila Sanusi. According to the statement, the prosecutions included a recent case involving a man apprehended for indiscriminate waste dumping, who is currently serving a jail term.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made the revelation while speaking on Sunrise Daily, a flagship programme on Channels Television. He highlighted the challenges of waste management in a rapidly urbanising city like Lagos and the importance of shared responsibility between government and residents.

Dr Gbadegesin stressed that LAWMA remains committed to enforcing environmental laws and holding offenders accountable, noting that strict enforcement serves as a deterrent to practices that undermine public health and environmental sustainability.

He further called on residents to adopt proper waste disposal habits, emphasising that responsible waste management is critical to achieving a cleaner, more liveable, and sustainable Lagos State for present and future generations.
