Whitesands School in Lekki recently hosted the "Inclusive Chess Day," an event dedicated to the theme "Every Child Deserves a Move." The program brought together children of all abilities to demonstrate the power of intellectual engagement in advancing disability inclusion. The event served as a vibrant platform for children with disabilities to participate in sports and community activities in a welcoming environment.

The initiative was a collaborative effort involving Vulpes Inclusive Engagement, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), and Chess in the Slum Africa. These organizations worked in tandem to raise awareness about the importance of providing equal opportunities for children with disabilities. The partnership highlighted how sports and strategic games like chess can break down social barriers and foster a sense of belonging.

LASODA’s General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, emphasized the agency's commitment to supporting impactful initiatives that drive conversations around inclusion. She stated that partnering with organizations that share this vision is paramount to the agency's mission. Such events are crucial for ensuring that disability rights remain at the forefront of the state’s social agenda.

Organizer Onyinye Atunaya described chess as a unique tool where every child, regardless of physical or cognitive ability, can think, participate, and thrive. The game encourages critical thinking and patience, skills that are valuable for all children in their personal development. The event aimed to celebrate these children’s potential rather than focusing on their limitations.

A major highlight of the day featured Tunde Onakoya and his team from Chess in the Slum Africa, who led interactive sessions with the participants. These skill-building activities were designed to reinforce confidence and inspire the children to see themselves as capable strategists. The enthusiasm displayed by the children underscored the success of the initiative in providing a space where they felt truly seen. The Inclusive Chess Day concluded with a powerful affirmation that every child, regardless of their background or physical challenges, deserves a chance to excel. By fostering an environment of support and intellectual stimulation, the organizers hope to spark a wider movement for inclusion across Nigeria. The event stands as a testament to the positive impact of community-driven support in the lives of vulnerable children.
