Lagos Ministry of Justice Hosts Canadian Delegation on Justice Sector Collaboration

The Lagos State Ministry of Justice has hosted a delegation from the Canadian Department of Justice as part of an international knowledge-sharing engagement focused on strengthening criminal justice processes. The visit took place on Monday, February 2, 2026, in Lagos.

Welcoming the delegation, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, expressed appreciation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his continued support of justice sector reforms. He noted that the enabling environment provided by the State Government has enhanced effective prosecution and institutional growth.
Mr. Pedro highlighted the Ministry’s efforts in addressing gender-based violence, child abuse, and human trafficking through coordinated legal and institutional responses. He emphasised the importance of inter-agency collaboration, capacity building, and victim-centred approaches in achieving meaningful justice outcomes.
Earlier, the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mr. Hameed Oyenuga, provided an overview of the Ministry’s structure and ongoing reforms. He described the visit as an opportunity for mutual learning and exchange of best practices between both jurisdictions.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Co-Director of the Canada-Nigeria Justice Cooperation Project, Ms. Genevieve Westrope, commended Lagos State’s commitment to justice sector reform. She noted that Lagos is recognised as a leading authority in justice administration and expressed optimism about future collaboration.
