Lagos Government Pledges More Public Toilets to End Open Defecation

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday reiterated its commitment to expanding safe, accessible, and sustainable sanitation infrastructure across the state, with a focus on ending open defecation.

The announcement was made during the 2025 World Toilet Day celebration at Eko FM Multi-Purpose Hall, Ikeja, led by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, represented by Prince Fatiu Akinolu of LASAA.

Wahab highlighted the approval for 20 new public toilet facilities, comprising 10 units each, to be added to the existing 1,710 units across the state.

He also stated that the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office would be strengthened to efficiently manage faecal sludge and support sustainable sanitation initiatives.

The government is partnering with WaterAid Nigeria, UNICEF, USAID, and the World Bank to promote sanitation innovation and foster a circular economy in faecal sludge management..


“The state is in partnership with WaterAid Nigeria to conduct a pivotal study on the sanitation circular economy, identifying opportunities in faecal sludge management and strategic collaborations to foster sustainable practices,” he said.
“Other collaborations with development partners will ensure innovative solutions and broaden access to safe toilets for all residents,” he added.

Permanent Secretary Gaji Omobolaji and Prof. Babatunde Onajobi emphasised that sanitation is a human right, urging collective action, increased funding, and public awareness to ensure access to safe and sustainable facilities.
