Kenyans living and working overseas sent home Sh649.9 billion in 2025, underlining the continued importance of diaspora remittances to the country’s foreign exchange position.

Data released by the Central Bank of Kenya shows total inflows for the 12 months to December reached $5.04 billion, up from $4.95 billion recorded in 2024. The increase represents a 1.9 per cent annual rise, translating to an additional Sh11.9 billion sent into the economy.

While annual figures showed growth, December inflows eased slightly on a year-on-year basis. Remittances for the month stood at $435.5 million, compared with $445.4 million in December 2024, reflecting a 2.2 per cent decline.

However, December receipts were significantly higher than those recorded in November, when inflows amounted to $388.3 million. The month-on-month increase of 12.2 per cent pointed to a late-year rebound in transfers from abroad.

As of mid-January 2026, Kenya’s reserves stood at $12.48 billion, equivalent to 5.4 months of import cover. This level comfortably exceeds the statutory minimum requirement of four months.

The sustained growth in remittances comes despite economic pressures in key source countries, including slower growth, tighter financial conditions and changing labour markets. Analysts say the figures highlight the resilience and ongoing engagement of the Kenyan diaspora, with funds largely directed towards household expenses, healthcare and education.
