Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis will travel to New York this Tuesday for a high-profile diplomatic visit that includes a scheduled meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The visit underscores Greece’s continuing involvement in global diplomacy as it serves as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
During his stay in New York from January 27 to 31, Gerapetritis will participate in a Security Council debate focused on the Middle East. The Greek foreign minister is expected to deliver remarks that reflect Greece’s position on regional stability and international cooperation amid ongoing tensions in the region.
The minister’s appearance at the Security Council comes as Greece deepens its role in international decision-making. Since taking up its non-permanent seat last year, Greece has been increasingly active in discussions on security and diplomatic solutions to major global issues.
Following his address, Gerapetritis will hold bilateral talks with UN officials, including his meeting with Secretary-General Guterres. The discussions are expected to cover a range of global challenges, including regional conflicts, migration, and international cooperation.
In addition to his UN engagements, Gerapetritis will meet with members of the Greek diaspora in New York. The meetings aim to strengthen ties with Greeks living abroad and discuss ways the government can better support the diaspora community.
The visit reflects Greece’s broader diplomatic strategy of combining high-level international engagement with outreach to its global communities. Officials say the trip will reinforce Greece’s voice on key global issues while also supporting the country’s relationship with its citizens overseas.
