U.S. Ambassador to France Barred from Government Access Over Protocol Breach

The French government has restricted U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner from meeting with officials after he failed to appear at a summons from the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The summons followed public comments by Kushner regarding the recent death of French far-right activist Quentin Deranque, which French authorities said risked influencing domestic debate. This marks the second instance in which Kushner ignored an official request; in August 2025, he missed a similar summons over remarks about anti-Semitic incidents in France.

Diplomatic sources emphasized that the ban is a standard measure reflecting France’s insistence on protocol. The Foreign Ministry stated that ambassadorial access will remain restricted until proper procedures are observed.

Observers note that Kushner’s public statements have heightened tensions between Paris and Washington, underlining the delicate balance between diplomatic freedom of expression and respect for national affairs.

French officials have called on all foreign representatives to exercise restraint in commenting on internal matters to prevent further diplomatic friction.

The U.S. Embassy has not released an official response regarding the restriction. Analysts warn that continued disregard for summonses could escalate bilateral tensions.

This development underscores the importance of protocol adherence in international diplomacy and highlights the scrutiny foreign diplomats face when addressing sensitive domestic events.
