Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has officially declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a work-free day for all public servants in commemoration of this year’s Isese Day, a celebration dedicated to Yoruba culture, spirituality, and indigenous traditions.

The announcement was made through a circular issued by the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, on Monday, August 18, 2025. The circular, addressed to accounting officers and top government functionaries across ministries, agencies, local councils, and parastatals, outlined the details of the observance and urged wide dissemination within government offices.

“It is hereby notified for general information that this year’s Isese Day Celebration will hold on Wednesday, 20th August, 2025,” the circular stated. It further emphasized that the observance reflects the Lagos State Government’s ongoing commitment to promoting indigenous culture, preserving heritage, and supporting traditional institutions.

Agoro highlighted that government offices are expected to reopen the following day, Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. He instructed all accounting officers to ensure that the circular receives “Service-wide publicity” to inform staff of the temporary suspension of official duties.

Isese Day has, in recent years, gained formal recognition in Lagos State as part of broader cultural policies aimed at fostering inclusivity, raising awareness of Yoruba spiritual and cultural heritage, and encouraging the preservation of traditional practices. The day provides an opportunity for residents and public servants alike to engage in cultural festivities, reflect on ancestral customs, and celebrate the rich tapestry of Lagos’ indigenous traditions.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s declaration reinforces the state’s position on valuing cultural identity while supporting initiatives that strengthen traditional institutions and community cohesion. As Lagos continues to balance rapid modernization with cultural preservation, observances like Isese Day serve as critical reminders of the state’s historical and spiritual roots.
