Ghana has deported three Israeli citizens following the alleged mistreatment and deportation of Ghanaian travellers by Israeli authorities. The decision was officially announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citing the need to protect the rights and dignity of Ghanaian nationals abroad.
The expelled Israelis reportedly arrived in Accra earlier this week but were immediately sent back after Ghanaian officials reviewed the circumstances surrounding the earlier incident in Israel.
The ministry stated that the action was a direct response to what it described as “unjust and humiliating” treatment of three Ghanaians at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister confirmed that the Israeli embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires ad interim had been summoned to discuss the matter, with both countries agreeing to seek a diplomatic resolution to prevent further escalation.
Earlier, seven Ghanaians, including members of a parliamentary delegation attending an international cybersecurity conference, were reportedly detained in Israel. While four were released after hours of diplomatic intervention, three were deported back to Ghana.
The ministry emphasized that Ghana’s response was proportionate and necessary to uphold international norms and protect its citizens. It stressed that the government remains committed to maintaining positive relations with Israel while ensuring that Ghanaians are treated with fairness and respect.
Israeli authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding Ghana’s deportation of their citizens. Ghanaian officials reiterated that the country will continue to monitor the situation closely, signaling readiness to take further measures if necessary.
The incident has drawn attention to the importance of protecting citizens abroad and ensuring that diplomatic protocols are followed to prevent misunderstandings between nations. Analysts suggest that the event may prompt both countries to strengthen communication channels to avoid similar disputes in the future.
Ghana’s move reflects a growing emphasis on reciprocal diplomatic measures to safeguard national interests, highlighting the delicate balance between maintaining international relations and defending citizen rights.
