Nigeria’s federal government launched an artificial intelligence‑enabled tracking system designed to identify and monitor visa overstayers in the country. The initiative is part of a broader plan to strengthen immigration oversight, reduce irregular migration, and enhance national security. Authorities said the new technology will improve data collection on foreigners who overstay legal permits and inform targeted enforcement actions. The government also outlined plans for coordination with agencies nationwide to manage irregular migration more effectively.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky presented national honours to key Ukrainian diaspora figures who bolstered global backing for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Awards included the Order of Merit, III Class to film director Huto Pashko, Petro Revka and Miroslava Skirko. Women diaspora leaders such as Victoria Petrovska, Maria Khrystyna Zinko and Darya Russu received the Order of Princess Olga. Ex‑Canada diaspora head Ihor Mihalchysyn earned the Cross of Ivan Mazepa. 



 






Greek Parliament Approves Postal Voting for Overseas Voters, Rejects Dedicated Diaspora Constituency

Greece’s legislature passed electoral reforms allowing postal voting for citizens abroad, securing over 200 affirmative votes. However, a plan to create a dedicated diaspora parliamentary constituency with three seats failed to meet the constitutional supermajority requirement, so Greeks overseas won’t have exclusive representation yet. PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis framed the change as expanding democratic participation, while some opposition voices raised concerns about equity and implementation safeguards. 





Two Men Face Trial in London Over Alleged Surveillance of Hong Kong Diaspora

Two British‑Chinese nationals — former Hong Kong police superintendent Bill Yuen and UK Border Force official Peter Wai — are on trial in London accused of covertly surveilling the Hong Kong diaspora for Chinese authorities. Prosecutors allege the men monitored pro‑democracy activists and accessed official systems to gather information, including on critics like MP Iain Duncan Smith. Both defendants deny charges under the UK’s National Security Act related to foreign interference activities. 



 





U.S. Embassy in Abuja Shuts Down Routine Operations Over Planned Protests

The United States Mission in Abuja temporarily suspended all routine services including visa interviews and American Citizen Services citing credible intelligence about planned protests in Nigeria’s capital. The embassy said operations would resume on March 9, and urged applicants to monitor rescheduled appointments via email and official portals. Heightened security followed reports of possible demonstrations by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and other groups. 









ICMPD, NAPTIP Train CSOs, Urge Strategies to End Trafficking in Nigeria

The International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) partnered with Nigeria’s NAPTIP to train civil society organisations on strategies to combat human trafficking and violence against persons. A workshop in Asaba equipped CSOs from several states with community sensitisation approaches under the STEAP‑TIP‑VAP initiative funded by the Netherlands. Officials stressed sustained community education and reporting as key to reducing trafficking and abuse nationwide. 





 




Reps Committee Pledges Better Funding for Nigerians in Diaspora Commission

Nigeria’s House of Representatives committee overseeing diaspora affairs committed to advocating increased funding for the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) to better support Nigerians living abroad. Lawmakers said enhanced financing is essential for the commission to effectively deliver services, expand programs, and address gaps in consular support and engagement. The move aims to strengthen institutional capacity, improve diaspora welfare, and facilitate greater economic and social contributions from Nigerians overseas into national development. 




Kenya Mobilises Middle East Ambassadors for Urgent Coordination Amid Conflict

Amid escalating regional tensions in the Middle East, the Kenyan government engaged its ambassadors in key Gulf capitals to coordinate support and protection for Kenyan citizens. Officials emphasised the need for real‑time information sharing, consular assistance, and contingency planning as conflicts intensified after major military actions involving external powers. The move seeks to ensure the safety of Kenyan nationals abroad, provide accurate travel advisories, and facilitate emergency responses, urging citizens to register with local missions for updates.  









Russia Evacuates Over 100 Women, Children from Tehran Embassy Amid Regional Tensions

Russia confirmed that more than 100 women and children were evacuated from its embassy in Tehran as Middle East hostilities intensified after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. The Russian Embassy said the evacuation, conducted between March 3 and 4, prioritised dependents and non‑essential family members, who were taken across the Azerbaijan border before flights to Russia. Group Unveils Plan to Mobilise 5 Million Votes for Tinubu

A pro‑Tinubu political support group, the Global Alliance for Tinubu Campaign (GATIC 2027), has launched an ambitious national plan to mobilise five million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the January 2027 presidential election. At an Abuja press briefing, Director‑General Prince Bevis Paul Igbinoba said the group has grassroots structures across all 774 local government areas and will leverage nationwide and diaspora networks to consolidate support. The group cited economic reforms like fuel subsidy removal and unified foreign‑exchange policy as reasons to back Tinubu’s re‑election.
