The family of a 22-year-old Nigerian ride-hailing driver killed in South Africa has launched an urgent appeal for financial assistance to repatriate his remains to Nigeria for burial.

Isaac David Satlat was reportedly attacked and strangled in Pretoria West after picking up two passengers who had requested a ride through an e-hailing platform. His vehicle was later found abandoned in Atteridgeville, where his body was also discovered the same day.

Relatives say they are overwhelmed by grief and the sudden financial burden of transporting his body back to Nigeria. According to family spokesperson Otila Onoja, the cost of repatriation and funeral arrangements is beyond what the family can currently afford.

The young man had travelled to South Africa in search of better prospects and was studying mobile engineering. He was expected to complete his programme next month, a milestone his family had been eagerly anticipating before his life was cut short.

Describing him as hardworking and peace-loving, his relatives said he was committed to building a responsible future for himself. They are now calling on members of the Nigerian community in South Africa, as well as well-wishers, to support efforts to ensure he receives a proper burial in his hometown.

The killing has reignited concerns over the safety of ride-hailing drivers in South Africa. Representatives of industry associations say drivers remain vulnerable to violent crimes, as attackers can easily request trips through digital platforms and target unsuspecting operators.

Police in Gauteng have confirmed the arrest of two suspects, a man and a woman, in connection with the case. The female suspect was initially apprehended and faces charges including murder and carjacking. Authorities later detained a second individual believed to be involved in the attack. A third suspect is still being sought.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court as investigations continue. Meanwhile, the ride-hailing company involved has expressed condolences to the victim’s family and pledged cooperation with law enforcement authorities handling the case.
