A diaspora-based civic organisation, the Global Nigerian Advocacy Network (GNAN), has called on Nigeria’s newly nominated ambassadors to uphold the nation’s image as they prepare to assume their diplomatic assignments. The group emphasized that the conduct and performance of envoys abroad play a critical role in shaping international perceptions of Nigeria.
In a statement released on Tuesday, GNAN said the new nominees have an opportunity to “reset and elevate” Nigeria’s diplomatic presence by demonstrating professionalism, transparency, and strong engagement with host countries. The organisation noted that the expectations of Nigerians in the diaspora are higher than ever, especially in a period marked by global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tension.
According to GNAN, the credibility of Nigeria’s missions abroad will depend not only on political experience but also on the ability of envoys to connect with citizens living outside the country. The group stressed that diaspora communities often rely on embassies for documentation, dispute resolution, and emergency assistance, making effective leadership essential.
The organisation urged the nominees to prioritise efficiency in consular services, describing delays and poor communication as longstanding challenges. GNAN said that improving embassy operations would help restore confidence among Nigerians living overseas, who frequently express frustration over bureaucratic obstacles.
GNAN also encouraged the nominees to engage actively with foreign investors and governments in order to expand economic partnerships. Strong diplomatic efforts, the group argued, could attract investment opportunities to Nigeria and strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, education, and security.
The statement further advised the incoming envoys to show deeper cultural diplomacy by promoting Nigeria’s creative industries, tourism potential, and innovation sectors. GNAN added that positive storytelling about Nigeria could shift global narratives and counter negative stereotypes often associated with the country.
The diaspora group expressed confidence that if the nominees approach their roles with accountability and vision, they can significantly enhance Nigeria’s standing on the world stage. It also called for measurable goals to be set for each mission, ensuring that progress can be monitored throughout their tenure.
GNAN concluded by urging the federal government to support the envoys with adequate resources and training, noting that well-equipped missions are essential for effective diplomacy. The group said it remains committed to working with Nigerian embassies worldwide to strengthen ties between the diaspora and the homeland.
