A diaspora-based support group has congratulated former Imo State governor, Chief Ikedi Godson Ohakim, following his receipt of the Grand Service Star of Imo State (GSSI), one of the state’s highest honours.
The award was presented by the Imo State Government as part of activities marking the state’s 50th anniversary, which featured the recognition of prominent individuals whose contributions have shaped Imo’s development and public life.
Reacting to the honour, the Imo Diaspora Support for Governor Hope Uzodimma described the recognition as well deserved, citing Ohakim’s record in governance and public service. The group’s convener, Chief Dr. Ochiagha Nnanna Okere, said the former governor’s impact continues to resonate across the state.
In a statement issued from Finland, Okere praised Ohakim’s leadership qualities and enduring legacy, noting that his tenure as governor left visible marks on infrastructure, governance reforms, and environmental management.
He specifically referenced the Clean and Green Initiative introduced during Ohakim’s administration, which significantly improved sanitation and urban aesthetics in Owerri and earned the city national recognition at the time.
Okere also commended Ohakim’s role as a political mentor and strategist, describing him as a leader whose ideas and experience remain relevant to Imo State and beyond.
The diaspora group further acknowledged Ohakim’s consistent support for the current administration in the state, stating that his cooperation has contributed to governance stability.
The group concluded by wishing the former governor continued strength and wisdom as he supports public service initiatives and guides younger leaders.
