Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and the welfare of residents affected by the demolition of environmentally unsafe buildings across the state.

The call followed a study by DGI Consult, supported by Gatefield, which revealed that inflation and low incomes have made managing diabetes extremely expensive. Experts described the situation as a national crisis requiring urgent government action.
Animashaun explained that the government remains committed to ensuring that no resident is denied the right to own property in Lagos while removing structures that pose environmental threats
Compensation for affected residents ranged from ₦1 million to ₦5 million depending on the value of their demolished properties, with further batches to follow.

Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude. Nwaoha Rosemary, who received ₦1 million, described the support as a relief, while Patrick Arinze, who got ₦3 million, said, “They have done the right thing at the right time. People complained, but what the government has done supersedes our concerns.”
“The very first time we compensated people, 79 affected persons collected their cheques. Today, another 100 people are receiving theirs. Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu promised that those affected would be compensated. That is promise made, promise fulfilled,” Animashaun said.
“This is not the end of the compensation distribution. More residents will be supported over several batches to ensure fairness and welfare for all affected,” he added.
Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN), denied allegations that the government disobeyed a court order, explaining that the demolition began earlier but was temporarily suspended to allow residents time to relocate.
